Buffalo
Soldiers were all black US Army Units that were formed in the
mid-1800's. The Buffalo Soldier units were sent to the West to
protect settlers, cattle herds and railroad crews and to fight
in some of the battles against Native Americans. The Native
Americans gave the troops the name Buffalo Soldiers out of
respect and the fierce fighting ability of the 10th Cavalry. It
was also because their short, dark, curly hair resembled the
mane of the buffalo.
The Buffalo Soldiers faced prejudice from within the army and
from the frontier communities they were stationed in. However
they were still able to excel at performing all their duties and
distinguished themselves in action during the Indian wars and
during the Spanish-American War. None of the Buffalo Soldier
regiments fought in World War I but many of the men served in
other units that went into combat.
During World
War II most of the Buffalo Soldier units were disbanded and the
the men were assigned different units. The Twenty-Fourth
Infantry was the last unit to disband after the US military was
officially desegregated.
