However, Africa's traditional societies are dwindling, and many bold photographers have made it their mission to record the folkways of every tribe they can--especially the ways of ritual and observance. The ceremonies and traditions captured in these stationery items --weddings, initiations, rites of passage, invocations of the spirit world--are spectacular, full of awe and exuberance.

The spectacular images of traditional African women shown here were captured by Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith, kindred spirits who share a fascination for Africa and a sense of urgency about recording the continent’s rapidly disappearing native lifeways.
